To what extent is the 'rise and fall' narrative an adequate one in examining the key themes of the popular press over the last century? "Once upon a time, according to this recurring tale, arguments were expounded at length and listened to. Once upon a time the public meeting, the serious newspaper...was a model for public discourse...the golden age beckons tantalizingly, a generation ago."
