The representation of young people in the media. I am going to be looking at how the media represents young girls and why this is important. Representation is presentation to the mind of an idea or image. Representation in the media becomes more important when you look at audience models. If we look at the hypodermic model - the idea that the audience is passive and just accepts what they are told - representation becomes more important. This is because if a subject, such as young girls, are misrepresented, it implies that the audience will not question these ideas and will form an incorrect idea of what young girls are like. However, if we look at the audience as being active, i.e. they question ideas that are presented to them, representation remains important.
