What pleasure does the audience get from watching Gladiator (2000)? Pleasure is derived from a film in many ways, whether it is tension from the narrative constraints or the choice of music used, it is what keeps the audience watching and enjoying films. The two main types of pleasure that derive from watching Gladiator, that I noticed, were emotional pleasure and visceral pleasure. The first kind, emotional pleasure, when offered to an audience is particularly significant when it generates a strong audience response. In the film the audience is meant to share the sorrow and grief that Maximus (Russell Crowe) feels when his wife and child are murdered, which is achieved in many ways, including music, shot types and acting. Through this sharing of feelings the audience forms a bond with the character and therefore as further events take place they feel what the character would be feeling, for instance his encounters...
