The film Gladiator was released on 5th May in 2000 and was directed by Riddle Scott. Gladiator has many themes to the film such as, love, hatred, jealousy and it is a sword and sandal epic. The protagonist of the film is Maximus, who is played by Russell Crowe. The other casts in the film are Joaquin Phoenix (Commodus), Connie Neilson (Lucilla) and Richard Harris (Markus Aurelius). In the final days of Markus Aurelius' reign, ailing Marcus Aurelius' proposed to Maximus to be the future Emperor, rather than his own son, Commodus. Commodus became bitter and revengeful after coming to terms with his fathers decision. Power hungry, Commodus kills Markus Aurelius and orders the death of Maximus and his family.
