It's a movie and I went out of my way not to do theatre with the movie.' Sam Mendes has tried hard not to make 'American Beauty' a theatrical piece. He states this when he is interviewed by a reporter from TIME magazine. Sam Mendes has only ever worked in theatre and has won a 'Toni' award (an award for theatre). He is very well known for all his work in the theatre, so making a film, for the big screen was quite a big step into the unknown for someone with very little experience with movie-making.
