Yellow Earth Hopes and fear Clash between Change and Tradition The movie "Yellow Earth," directed by Chen Kaige and set in 1939 near the Yellow River, begins with the portrayal of a communist soldier (Gu) collecting local folk songs for the military in the Shaanxi region of China. The film shows the life of a poor family that lives in a remote rural farming community, and their interaction with a communist soldier. The family lives in a village within the walking distance of the Yellow river, which provides water for the villagers facing a seemingly endless drought. The main plot however is about Ciuqiao, a fourteen-year-old girl that is beginning the first major chapter in her life. Learning about both love and suffering, Ciuqiao experiences the frustrating battle of hope against hopelessness as she refuses to submit herself blindly to what tradition is requiring of her.
