The film shows the life of a poor family that lives in a remote rural farming community, and their interaction with a communist soldier. The family lives in a village within the walking distance of the Yellow river, which provides water for the villagers facing a seemingly endless drought. The main plot however is about Ciuqiao, a fourteen-year-old girl that is beginning the first major chapter in her life.
