With close reference to at least two films that you have studied, discuss how an understanding of particular genre conventions enhances your appreciation of them. Given the vast range of films available to view in cinemas, on video or television, people must select the films they view. Some people choose certain films because they are a fan of a particular actor or director, others because a film is newly released and highly publicised. However, many people will select their choice of viewing based upon what kind of film is on offer - horror, SF, comedy, thriller etc. Most people automatically understand the differences between these different categories of film and can easily state their preferences, but as film studies students we must demonstrate a deeper more critical awareness of these differences, and why familiarity with them can enhance viewers' appreciation.
