While I was watching the opening scenes of 1944 and the 1997 versions of the film 'Great Expectations' I noticed a number of techniques had been used to create atmosphere.

While I was watching the opening scenes of 1944 and the 1997 versions of the film 'Great Expectations' I noticed a number of techniques had been used to create atmosphere. For example, a certain part in the 1944 version stuck in my mind that was the tree. I think it has been is used to represent death, I think this is a really effective at creating a scary atmosphere, however in the 1997 version birds have been used to represent freedom, I do not think this is as effective as the 1944 because you didn't really notice what the birds represent after watching the film a couple of times. To begin with In the 1944 version, the story has not been edited because the story is told the same way as the book, where as in the 1997 version the film has been edited to change the story around a bit....
