What are the intended effects of the opening of Ridley Scott's Gladiator and how effective are they? From the start of Ridley Scott's Gladiator you can see the opening of the film is going to be a key part. The film opens with the Gladiator walking through a cornfield with a spotlight on him and the sound of children in the background. The director has chosen to put a spotlight on him to show that he is a very important character in the film and to make him stand out from the surroundings. Throughout the opening the audience can see that the Gladiator acts as a narrator as well because he is the only character that does most of the talking.
