What Factors Made 'The Full Monty' Such An Instant Success? Dan Holford - English Media Coursework 'The Full Monty' was released in 1997 and was an instant success. The film was based on working class family issues, such as unemployment, a change in sexuality and family problems, despite this film being released as a comedy and not a film of social realism. The plot is based on 6 major characters, all unemployed, which have an idea to earn them much needed money. The inspiration they have came from an idea that Gaz, the main character and 'Jack the Lad' of the group, thought of after his divorced wife, and many of his friends' partners visited a male stripping group.
