How does the director of the film the others, create suspense with the use of sound? The others was released in 2001 and was directed by Alejandro Amenàbar. Niokole Kidman plays Grace, the high strung mother of two children, Anne played by Alikima Mann and Nicholas played by James Bentley. The children have a rare disease meaning that they are photosensitive. Being photosensitive means that they are allergic to any form of light that is much brighter than an oil lamp flame. The children of grace have such a strong dose of the disease that even the muted fog enshrouded sun of the Channel Islands. Grace enforces strict rules for the children's protection, for example, when entering a room, you must lock the previous door immediately after you enter a room and no door may be opened without the previous one being closed.
