In the film 'Cinema Pardiso', Tornatore illustrates the fact that everything in our past has an effect on our future. Essentially that our childhood experiences make the adults we become. Whether it is the relationships we have, the religious and moral influences, our economical situation or even the early passion and interests we form. All of these factors have the potential to have a negative influence on our lives depending on whether we choose to acknowledge and embrace the past or simply let it become a forgotten memory. Tornatore establishes these ideas in the beginning scenes of 'Cinema Paradiso' using traditional but extremely effective filming techniques, in particular using lighting and symbolism as two main methods.
