In 1993, the whole world was shocked by the case of James Bulger, a two year old boy tortured then left for dead across a railway line by two ten year old boys, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson in Merseyside. The public could hardly deal with the fact that it was children responsible. What leads youngsters to commit such horrific crimes like this; bad parenting, learning difficulties, economic and social deprivation, or perhaps the media? In attempting to gain answers for this question, I will explore the relationship between media and violence within young people, looking in particular at the Bulger case. I will also look into the factors that may have caused Venables and Thompson to commit their crime. When it first emerged that it was two ten year olds responsible for the torture and eventual murder of James Bulger, the media searched for reasons why. What could...
