The areas of representation I will be focusing on are the way black Americans are represented in 2-3 Hollywood crime films. The two films I will be analysing are "Beverley Hills Cop" (1984) and "In The Heat Of The Night". Both films contain black heroes and both films have been important in different ways, for example "Beverly Hills Cop" helped Eddie Murphy become a mainstream star. "In The Heat Of The Night" won several Oscars even though it was quite controversial. Importantly, Sidney Poitier went on to win the Oscar for his role in this film's sequel. He was the first black actor to win this award. Mirisch Company, which is independent, produced "In The Heat Of The Night" but it also had financial backing from a major studio (MGM). This film would be classified as an independent film because it has low production values and mainly targets niche audiences. "Beverley Hills Cop"...
