James Hobson The Elephant Man The Elephant Man, directed by David Lynch, is a black and white film loosely based on the life of John (Joseph) Merrick after a doctor at a London hospital, Frederick Treves, discovered him. This 1980 movie version of 1880s Victorian society, displays how scientific, industrial and technological development and lack of care among the public deal with the unimaginable and inexplicable. John Merrick (John Hurt) was found living as a part of a traveling freak show. When the good Dr. Treves (Sir Anthony Hopkins) examines Merrick, it is discovered he has been living as a kept animal, beaten and starved. Merrick's severe deformity can bring Dr. Treves professional acclaim and recognition. Due to the unfortunate maltreatment of the elephant man, the good doctor came to treat and later know John Merrick.
