Mendes seems keen to explore the nature of beauty in all its different forms. Comment on the way he portrays different forms of beauty in the film "American Beauty" and speculate on the conclusions the film seems to be making about the nature of beauty. The film American Beauty is about a man named Lester (approximately mid-30's), and his life, which we are informed at the start of the film, would soon be over. This straightaway informs the audience that this has a non-linear narrative structure, and also builds tension by having the audience ask different questions. For example, instead of thinking: 'What is going to happen?' or any other sort of question, they are left to think; 'Why is he going to die? Who is going to kill him? 'When?'.
