Cael Pulitzer 4/30/04 Bombay Paper Mani Ratnam's Bombay sends a message against all of the violence in the 1994 Hindu/Muslim riots in Bombay. The film shows Hindus and Muslims as equals; in that their motives and acts of violence are equally justified and horrific. The love story of the film enhances tension amongst the religions, which is a constant throughout. A Hindu man from a wealthy family, Shekhar, and a Muslim woman, Shalia Bano, elope to Bombay from their home in the Thirunelveli district. Their two fathers nearly cause a riot in there hometown at first word of Shekhar and Bano's wedding.; but better heads prevail and Shekhar's father, the man that started the fight, reminds the crowd of eager participants that the dispute is between the two men, not Hindus and Muslims.
