In the course of this essay I am going to be discussing whether the opening scene on 'Gladiator' is effective. An effective opening sequence should create anticipation and make the audience want to watch on. I'll be looking at costume, props, setting, characters, symbolism and camerawork. At the beginning of 'Gladiator', Maximus imagines him self in heaven with his family. Heaven is represented by an image of his home. This heaven appears at the beginning of the film suggesting that Maximus might die soon. Maximus gets on to his horse and goes to join the cavalry. Animals are important in the opening scene as they are used symbolically. A dog is following Maximus. The dog symbolises loyalty and this reflects the loyalty of the soldiers to Maximus. Men on horses suggest they have power. The emperor has a white horse which makes him stand a part from the rest, the white colour...
