How do the various visual and non-verbal elements of Strictly Ballroom enhance the meaning of the film? 'Strictly Ballroom' combines various cinematic elements to explore the main theme of individuality over conformity and also the sub-themes passion over restraint and innovation over resistance to change. The director, Baz Luhrmann uses exaggerated techniques to display the non-realistic world of ballroom dancing and uses elements such as lighting, costumes, music, camera work, setting and dance to enhance the satirical nature of the film. Individuality over conformity is the dominating theme throughout 'Strictly Ballroom'. This theme is displayed through many visual and non-verbal elements. Scott's creative and individual instinct shines through when he is dancing in the studio by himself. He begins in the shadows when he is depressed but then breaks through into the spotlight when he finds the inspiration to dance.
