Media Based Coursework How do film trailers help promote films? Film trailers are designed to target a specific audience to instigate them to go and watch a film. Generally film trailers last no longer than a few minutes and within this space of time there are a number of elements that need to be included. For example, the genre needs to be established, as does a short synopsis, the pace of the film, director's name and the main characters. In Mission Impossible 2, the main character, Tom Cruise is introduced very early on, as the filmmakers know he will attract a lot of attention because he is good looking and a multi millionaire film star. In the first few seconds of this trailer all the above is already established, so only leaving the remainder of the trailer to fill out the plot.
