E Tomlinson How Genre and Narrative Are Established Genre is the name given to different categories and groups of media products. Its purpose in films is to help define and target a set audience. Genre is established by conventions, things we expect it see in different genres. For example, in a Western we'd expect to see a ranch and gun-slinging cowboys. Narrative is the name given to how the story of a media product is told. An example of narrative is in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring a brief history of the ring is given. This includes how it turns even those with good intentions to be overcome with greed for the ring's power. This gives the audience the idea there will be a character that will be able to look after the ring without suffering this.
