E Tomlinson How Genre and Narrative Are Established Genre is the name given to different categories and groups of media products. Its purpose in films is to help define and target a set audience. Genre is established by conventions, things we expect it see in different genres. For example, in a Western we'd expect to see a ranch and gun-slinging cowboys. Narrative is the name given to how the story of a media product is told. An example of narrative is in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring a brief history of the ring is given.
