... How Do films Tell Stories? The purpose of a film is to tell a story. Films do this by using structured narrative. Narrative does not just mean the storyline of a film, it is the methods employed to tell a story on screen, in which case we require an understanding of the film. The way each segment of the film is organized, arranged and presented to the viewer. High concept, Hollywood movies use the classic narrative. The Terminator is a good example of this type of movie. It is a high concept film which uses the classic narrative. As Todorov theorized, all stories start with an equilibrium, then there is an enigma (a problem) and a resolution. With the film ending up with a different equilibrium. In the Terminator the enigma is the Terminator trying to kill Sarah. However, there are more than one enigma as the enigma keeps coming back.
