The areas of representation I will be focusing on is the way black Americans are presented in 2-3 Hollywood crime films. The two films that I will be analysing are "Beverly Hills Cop"(1984) and "In The Heat Of The Night". Both films contain black heroes and both films have been important in different ways, for example "Beverly Hills Cop" helped Eddie Murphy become a mainstream star. "In The Heat Of The Night" won several Oscars even though it was quite controversial. The companies that produced "In The Heat Of The Night" was a Mirisch Company, which is independent but also had financial backing from major studios (MGM etc.) This shows that this film had low production values and was aimed at a niche audience.
