One is that it sets the tone of the film. In Sleepy Hollow there is a "scary" tone throughout. This is because Sleepy Hollow is a "gothic horror". The opening part is also very important because it establishes the basics of the film. These are the setting, the context and the genre. The setting is an isolated village called Sleepy Hollow.
