The short story is as old as the earliest tale telling.1 There are many longer narratives, such as epics and myths, which contain short episodes that can be divided into short stories. For example in the Bible there are hundreds of stories contained in chapters in different books that could be put into their own category of a short story. Whether or not the short story has its own genre is open to discussion. The idea behind the short story is to convey a message, or point, to the reader economising on words.2 Unlike a novel every part of a short story is important.
