Sam Tuke Directorial views on the Opening scene of: 'Gosford Park' As the introductory sponsors roll on, and the film opens, very quickly the atmosphere is set for the opening scene, this being an atmosphere of busy constant desperation. One of the contributing factors to this is the very careful and manipulative layout of sound in the first few seconds which build up to the entrance of the music. The first sounds we hear in the film are very important, and this importance is doubled by the fact that the film opens to a black screen, and the lack of anything visual to focus on really draws our attention to anything that we can hear. This is a very common procedure used in film, to build suspense and drama out of effective nothing.
