Compare how the openings of 'Independence Day' and 'Mars Attacks' set the scene for the rest of the film. The openings of the film 'Independence Day' and 'Mars Attacks' play a huge part in setting the mood and atmosphere. They create a first impression to the audience through the combination of sound and visual effects. 'Independence Day' is introduced by a static image of the title in metallic, formal lettering. This is of a serious and business like nature. On the other hand, a road sign having 'Lock Jaw' written on it introduces 'Mars Attacks'. This is an unconventional beginning to a science-fiction film, as the audience would expect to see a technologically advanced city opposed to deserted countryside. The title 'Independence Day' creates suspense to the audience as each letter individually appears on the screen. The metallic, grey colour and the science-fiction type of writing introduce a morbid and eerie atmosphere....
