Assess the contribution made to contemporary cinema of Steven Spielberg. Steven Spielberg is considered one of the greatest directors of all time, and by far the most successful. He has made a massive contribution to contemporary cinema, and all in all, the films he has been involved have collectively grossed more than $2 Billion domestically. He is arguably the most important figure to emerge from the creative side of Hollywood cinema, and has altered the way in which movies are made. Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1947. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Steven did not attend a major university film program. Largely self-taught, he made his first film while still in his teens. In 1969, Spielberg's short film, Amblin, earned him a job with Universal Studios' TV unit, who immediately signed him to a seven-year contract.
