Kara Gorski Aesthetics of Cinema American History X is one of the finest films of the past ten years. Several techniques are used to portray the importance of the message that it is sending. It excels in using dialog, in combination with great visuals to move the narrative forward. Not only are these techniques original in their conveyance but they are quite striking. What really makes the horrifying reality of racism apparent is the cinematography of the second depiction of Edward Norton's character's murdering the black boy. The flashback used while Norton is recounting the murder leaves the audience with a sense of shock at the blatant hatred this character feels at the moment. This scene is of paramount importance within the context of the film. Without it one would not be able to grasp the character's motivation throughout the entire film.
