Respondeat superior (rehs-pond-dee-at superior) n. Latin for "let the master answer." Respondeat superior is a key doctrine of law that involves the relationship between an employer and the employee. It uses the doctrine of vicarious liability - vicarious meaning through another - that is defined as an individual (the employer) being held liable for the tortuous acts of another person (the employee). A tortuous act is loosely defined as a civil wrong for which the victim receives a remedy in the form of damages. Respondeat superior, then, means that the employer is liable for the things that the employee does under the range and course of his or her job. This doctrine applies to negligent torts (a violation of a reasonable person standard), intentional torts (where intent is required), and strict liability (no fault or intent required) proceedings.
