A constitution can be defined as a set of rights, powers and procedures that regulate the relationships between both institutions of state and citizens and between the institutions themselves.1 All states have some form of a constitution, although they vary dramatically in scope, detail and type. This essay will attempt to examine the constitutions of the United Kingdom and the United States in order to establish points of both difference and similarity, and ultimately determine how close the two states are in this respect. One of the most obvious differences between the two constitutions is the fact that the US constitution is codified; it is written down in one single document, written specifically for the purpose in 1787.
