Have a little read: ... Q: Why has the Constitution endured so long & changed so little? To answer this question one also has to understand what makes a compromise between two rivalling schools of thought so compelling. The Very existence of the American constitution was based on the compromise in Philadelphia between staunch Federalists and those who favoured a loose federation of individual states. Neither side secured an unambiguous victory at Philadelphia and by the logic of this we can come to conclusion that both parties would benefit in the supremacy and existence of this constitution rather then its demise. A constitution in its very essence is a conservative concept and its whole purpose is to be changed as little as possible and conserve the original document.
