Does the United Kingdom of Great Britain have a Constitution? Does it Matter? There is no definite answer to this question, much like the question of "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" It is a fact that we do not have a written constitution, but that is not to say we do not have a constitution. As stated by F.F. Ridley, "a constitution need not be embodied in a single document, or indeed, be wholly written."1 Instead, he argues that a constitution is a set of rules, laws and conventions which define and standardise our government, rather than a written document, which can be found in every country in our world with the exception of the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the 'state' of Israel.
