PUBLIC LAW 3 "The Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA) has had the effect of incorporating the European convention on Human Rights (ECHR) into our law and giving individuals rights which can be directly enforced in the UK courts."1 The UK joined the European union through the European communities Act 1972 and through time the HRA was incorporated into UK law in order to demonstrate the effectiveness and or ineffectiveness of the Human Rights Act 1998 it will help to briefly look at what was done before then to go on to discuss the effect of the Human Rights Act with reference to civil liberties, freedom of the individual, privacy and police powers. Traditionally there were no guarantees of fundamental rights in law and in theory if a law did not cover say privacy one could invade, so what was the approach?
