'Outline two contrasting perspectives chosen from those you have studied on this module and evaluate their ability to aid our understanding of crime in contemporary Britain.' The two theories I have chosen to evaluate are the 'labelling theory' and the 'subculture theory'. The labelling theory has been the subject of considerable controversy largely due to the fact that it is extremely difficult to apply the theory to any one individual or group. A useful way of explaining the 'labelling theory' on a simple level is cleverly done by Box in which he explains his theory of 'sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me'. He explains that as a child it is easy to ward off a peers allegation that 'you stink'. Reassurances of the contrary can always be obtained from other friends, siblings or parents. 'However as adulthood is approached, this turning aside of negative assertions...
