Introduction to Philosophy - Essay 1 - What is Wrong With Lying? I will begin with a definition of lying; purposefully saying something you know is false to get someone else to believe that it is true. In this essay I will consider two main philosophical theories which attempt to address the question. Jeremy Bentham, the founder of utilitarianism and a teleological believer, attempted to deal with the problem of lying. Teleology (or consequentialism), only considers the consequences of the action and uses these to decide if it is good or bad.
