There are several references to heat in this act. Why are they important? 'Martirio: last night it was so hot I couldn't get to sleep.' - Act 2 page 137. This line from Martirio is one of numerous lines referring to 'heat' within the house. In this context the line can be interpreted differently depending on how deeply you read into it. At face value, Martirio is simply backing up Amelia's statement to Poncia with regards to the lack of fresh air in the room. However, on a more metaphorical level, Martirio is making reference to the 'heat' or passion that is building up within the house, as a result of the emotions of the other sisters and her. She speaks of not being able to sleep as a result of the intense heat; this is significant as it suggests that perhaps Martirio is more involved in the situation than she...
