The Civil war is somewhat of a mystery to many of us in the modern world that we live in. Why exactly did it happen? Was it to free the slaves, or was it to save the Union? While the North wanted to restrict the slave trade the South pushed to continue using slaves in everyday life. The institution of slavery caused the South to seek state's rights. The continued intrusion on the South's definition of state's rights eventually caused the South to secede from the Union. Thus, the Union (the North) reacted and labeled the southern state's as rebels and demanded their return to the United States. The military became the only force that could only react to the action taken by the South. Therefore, the Civil War began. What was the condition of Blacks during this period?
