CST11SCA: SCREENPLAY ANALYSIS- ASSIGNMENT 1. Claudia Buttazzoni. I have chosen to use Syd Field's screenplay model to analyse the film Groundhog Day. Before analysing Groundhog Day I think it's important to briefly summarise Field's ideas and theories on what is a good model for a screenplay. To quote Field; "A screenplay is like a noun- about a person, or persons, in a place, or places, doing his or her "thing". All screenplays have subject and the subject of a screenplay is defined by action, what happens, and the character to whom it happens."1 This is Syd Field's definition of what a screenplay is, not how it should be structured. His theory of how a screenplay should be structured is that a screenplay requires a beginning, middle and end, where the beginning is the set up (or Act I), the middle is the confrontation (or Act II) and the end is the resolution...
