The Constitution of the United States serves as the overall riding laws of the land. The document was established originally in order to ensure American citizens their rights to life, liberty, and property, without any interference from the government or even other citizens. Provisions under this written document include the Bill of Rights, which protects the natural rights granted to the citizens, and also the Fourteenth amendment, which instills that no state can deprive any person of life, liberty and property without due process of law. The Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth amendment together become the "extended Bill of Rights," which is then used continuously to ensure that citizens' rights are not being violated within the states.
