UTILITARIANISM Michael Finley, 12DX Part A) Explain what is meant by the term "Utilitarianism" There are many types of Utilitarianism; many theories based around the same ideas. However, all the different types have one basic thing in common: they all look at the outcome of an action to determine whether it was right or wrong. This leads to a lot of stipulation when trying to judge an action that has not happened yet - it is extremely difficult to judge an action based on outcomes if the outcomes have not happened. Many ethicists have attempted to put their own spin on the various aspects of utilitarianism to allow people to use it in every day life. Some were more successful than others (as part two of this paper will attempt to elaborate on) but each presented very interesting and unique ideas.
