... How can I be sure toys are safe? The parts on toys for children younger than 3 years old should not be smaller than 1 1/4 inches in diameter or 2 1/4 inches long. Any part smaller than this could cause your child to choke. Check the label to make sure a toy is safe for your child's age. Keep toys meant for older children away from babies and toddlers. In order to be sold legally within Europe, toys must meet the requirements of the Toys Safety Directive 88/378/EEC and carry the CE mark In the UK this entails meeting the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 1989 and for, certain electrical toys, compliance with the Low Voltage Electrical Equipment Regulations 1989 is also necessary. The Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive may also be appropriate. If your product is designed, or clearly intended, for use in play by children less than fourteen
