The Review of the Criminal Justice System in Northern Ireland (2000:18) states, "when asked about the sentences given by the courts, most people (around 75 per cent) thought that they were too lenient". This essay will address some of the reasons behind this assumption. In trying to establish whether or not judges are guilty of leniency it will look at how media amplification plays a major role and examine the sentencing process; a process that has been accused of lacking transparency. A number of recent trials in Northern Ireland & England and Wales have made headline news for their apparent unduly lenient sentences. There was public outcry over the sentences received by Craig Sweeney, who abducted and sexually abused a three-year-old girl and Alan Webster, guilty of raping a twelve-week-old baby, abuse that was filmed by his partner, Tanya French.
