When considering this opinion, it is important to first look at the role the prison system is intended to play in criminal justice before analysing whether it actively achieves this role. There are two separate categories that the aims of sentencing fall into, Retributive theories of sentencing and Utilitarian theories of sentencing.1 Retributive theories of sentencing have three main components: Retribution is retrospective and mainly concerned with the fact that society is being avenged for the wrong-doing, as opposed to the future effects of the punishment.
