"Trial by jury the defendants most important protection against injustice" A body of 12 lay (ordinary) people sworn to decide the facts of a case to reach a verdict in the court of law. The jury is introduced into the trial procedure to be the arbiters of the facts in the case, this gives the legal system undisputed credibility. Juries are mainly implemented in criminal cases but juries are also used in some civil cases e.g. inquest and libel trials.1 The juries first occurrence can be seen in the twelfth century, during the reign of Henry II. Here the jury consisted of the accused friends and neighbours rather than today's dozen randomly selected adults. Previous to this the jury was a Norman convention made up of 12 men prepared to swear on oath as to the persons innocence, hence the original concept of the jury was precisely the opposite of...
