The judiciary in the US and the UK are very different bodies. Under separation of powers the US judiciary is entirely separate from the other branches of government and has the power to overrule many of their actions. The judiciary is organised on a state basis, with the Supreme Court in each state being responsible for judicial matters within its legal and geographical field. The Federal Supreme Court in Washington is responsible for all other areas and its main role is to interpret laws in the context of the US Constitution, although it can only do so when a case is bought to them; as with the UK judiciary they are essentially a passive force.
