Christina Ware Essay 5g: Discuss the possible alternatives to trial by jury Juries have existed since Norman times and whilst they are seen as "the lamp that shows that freedom lives," they do have their disadvantages. Drawbacks include that no reasons for their verdicts are given, they may make verdicts using unreliable means and they may struggle with complicated cases such as fraud. There is also the potential for jury nobbling, the media may influence their verdict and in civil cases juries have a problem with awarding damages. Another serious disadvantage is that juries are very expensive. For these reasons the government has attempted to come up with alternatives to juries. One method of trial which could be used is to have trial by a single judge. This method is already used in the majority of civil cases.
