History SA 1) Why was their so much opposition to the new poor law? (15 marks) The new poor law system was set up in the 1830, s. England in the 1830's was still predominately a rural society where local identity was often stronger than the idea of the nation. The centralisation of the new poor law was almost bound to provoke fierce resistance. The central authority formed was known as the poor law commission. The three main commissioners that made up this board were called J.G Show-Lefeure, Thomas Frankland and George Nicholls, Chadwick was made sectary to the commission. There job was to ensure that the decisions made by the central authority were executed at a local level.
