To what extent does public order law strike a satisfactory balance between the competing interests at stake in this area? Public order law is a delicate balance between the rights of individuals to freedom of expression, assembly and association to mention but a few, and the duties of the police and other authorities to uphold the peace. Both the common and statutory law now govern this area and this essay will examine both and how the law affects the interests of both the public and the police. First the most important freedoms will be discussed and then various public order offences. The law does recognise a freedom to associate for political purposes, however there are restrictions including those on members of the public service, to ensure a politically neutral public service, and against certain forms of association, such as belonging to certain groups such as the IRA, which the Terrorism Act 2000...
