To what extent do you consider that restriction of the availability of trial by jury would be a necessary and justifiable reform of the justice system? A trial by jury is when a defendant is judged by usually twelve average men and women. They have no in-depth knowledge of the law, they are lay men given the job of a judge, to listen to the evidence and make a decision as to whether the accused is guilty of the crime or not. There are grounds for and against having a trial by jury and whether it is necessary. A trial by jury may prolong trials, and they are the reason for slow justice. A study showed that rehabilitation of youth offenders were greatly aided by swift justice and rehabilitation beginning as soon as possible.1 This suggests that if trials were quicker youth offenders would have a better chance of being rehabilitated.
